<DescrizioneEstesa>Nowadays, urban regeneration of public housing faces a crucial - but also controversial - phase in the European countries. If, on one hand, the architectural and urban design is called to: tackle the inadequacy of the building heritage and open space, presenting serious problems of physical and social decay; answer today's housing demand; counter the stigma of mostly negative image. on the other hand, design has to operate in synergy with policies on which management, maintenance, and renovation of the housing stock depends. New opportunities open up for the architectural and urban solutions, enhancing resources, restoring qualities, strengthening performances, and open to new imaginaries. All this takes place in a context of increasingly fragile buildings and neighbourhoods called to face the challenge of climate change and energy efficiency. This book is inspired to a research by design initiative, applied to the case study of Tor Bella Monaca district in the city of Rome, in order to define a real way forward mass housing regeneration. The study focuses on the ground plane - the interface between open space and building - intended as the core to address and solve public housing's fragilities, starting from previous European scholars' and designers' experiences. In the first part, a critical investigation highlights the importance of public realm-building interface, including the investigation of its characteristics in Tor Bella Monaca. In the second part, the main design actions are presented and discussed. The third part introduces essential research themes to fuel the regeneration processes. Furthermore, the book comprehends some contributions from scholars with extensive experience in the field and representatives of institutions at the forefront of the public housing regeneration processes. Forword by Pierre-Alain Croset Oggi, in Europa, la rigenerazione urbana dell'edilizia residenziale pubblica affronta una fase cruciale ma controversa. Da un lato, l'architettura e l'urbanistica sono chiamate a fronteggiare l'inadeguatezza del patrimonio edilizio e degli spazi aperti, a rispondere alla domanda abitativa ed a contrastare lo stigma di un'immagine da tempo negativa. Da un altro lato, oggi si aprono nuove opportunità, le quali possono restituire qualità, potenziare le performance edilizie ed aprire a nuovi immaginari. Questa pubblicazione presenta i risultati di una 'research by design' sul tema, nel suo contesto si è affrontata la riqualificazione del quartiere di Tor Bella Monaca a Roma. In particolare, lo studio si è concentrato sull'adattamento del piano terra come punto cruciale per affrontare e risolvere le fragilità dell'edilizia popolare. La pubblicazione presenta infine una serie di contributi da parte di studiosi nel settore così come di rappresentanti di istituzioni all'avanguardia in termini di riqualificazione dell'edilizia popolare.
